Savvy Fans’ Interview with The Checks

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Nikki asks: How long have you guys been together for and what have been the hardest things as a band so far?

It all started back in 2003, so coming up seven years this year! At lunch we’d go to room 25 at Taka Grammar and play blisteringly loud music through the stereo system – I think the teachers didn’t mind it, it was probably a bit of a relief for them to hear ‘Rock n Roll’ or ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ pumping through the music block. Our time together since then has been a bit of a whirlwind adventure to say the least. We’ve worked very hard as a band and been lucky enough to tick off some boyhood dreams along the way – for me, playing with R.E.M was one of them. I remember listening to ‘Man on the Moon’ and ‘Orange Crush’ as a boy, I love those songs but never expected to open for the band let alone have Michael Stipe introduce us to the crowd! The challenging thing as a band is staying tight with each other whilst situations seem to change around you all the time. Good things take time… and lots of hard work.

Sophie asks: Are you guys planning on any overseas gigs this year?

We’ve been enjoying summer hanging out in NZ so far we don’t have any real plans to move overseas again. We’re looking at some Australian shows sometime in the next little while. It’ll be like a second album release for ‘Alice by the Moon.’

Eli asks: Who designed the album cover and what is your favourite animal featured on it??

A good friend of ours Liam Gerrard did it, was 100% hand drawn too. Around this time last year we talked about an idea of a mural of different characters or pixelated animals. I remember thinking ‘what is he gonna do?!’ but his pictures were choice! We’re all fans of the art and proud to have it on our album cover. I reckon the octopus is pretty hot. PS self promo – check out a Check deck!

Dion asks:  What was it like opening for AC/DC? Playing in front of so many people?

Pretty freakin’ crazy mate! The biggest audiences we’ve played to to date. I remember my Dad taking me to see his friends’ band play in Plymouth, England (where the Martins lived for a few years) at aged 5. They played versions of ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ and ‘All Right Now’ by Free which are all epic rock tunes! Seeing Acadaca play them was almost like hearing those songs for the first time again… good to finally see the real thing.

Ella asks: What has been the most memorable gig so far?

They’ve all got special moments about them. Some of the most memorable and historic ones have been at the Masonic Tav on Devonport’s North Shore. That place comes alive! It’s like a giant glowing, steam shack and the walls run with sweat from the more daring, Kiwi punters. Some good ones there.

Mathew asks: You guys have some sweet as looking gear. What’s your favourite guitar/equipment and what’s the story behind it?

Do we?? Thanks Mat, I actually only have only have one or two guitars it’s a Fender Strat 62 custom shop re-issue. But I’m really liking Gretsch guitars at the mo. There is a special one I’m looking for in particular that has a single pickup – maybe one day when I get enough money we can all go crazy and I’ll buy it off some old collector dude.

Lastly, Savvy asks: Are you guys looking forward to the all ages show on Sat?

All ages shows are always a blast! We’re really looking forward to seeing all the other bands play and hope everyone will be living it up for a dance! Many thanks to Savvy Promo for putting it all on. And to all of you that sent in interesting questions for me to answer! It’s been ace so thanks. See ya soon. Callum from The Checks x

Remember that the $15 presales are limited so once they run out, there will only be $20 door sales available!  Get in quick!  We are gathering quite a lot of amazing prizes to give away on the night so hope you are ready to walk away with heaps of free shizz!

Savvy Promotions presents: The Checks, The Naked And Famous, Clap Clap Riot + guests

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Savvy Promotions and LoveMusic.co.nz in association with MAINZ present an all ages show with The Checks, The Naked and Famous, Clap Clap Riot, and Long Story Short, Saturday 27th February at Ellen Melville Hall, Auckland.

Sometimes it’s refreshing to remember just how much enthusiasm it’s possible to have for music, and you will certainly find the most enthusiastic punters at an all ages show. A love of music doesn’t magically manifest itself at 18 – there’s a large crowd of youngsters with a thirst for good music out there, dead keen to see their favourite bands play live, and Savvy Promotions is here to quench that thirst, the not-for profit organisation bringing fantastic all ages shows to the city Auckland since 2004.

Headlining this stellar line up is The Checks – a band that need little introduction. Having toured across the world honing their blues soaked, vintage indie rock classicism, opening for acts such as Oasis, REM, The Hives, AC/DC and headlining their own shows, the five-piece have been back home more recently, releasing their second album Alice By The Moon, bejeweled with hits such as You and Me, Bagheera, and Ballroom Baby in June 2009. Having graced festival stages such as Rhythm and Vines and Big Day Out with their swaggering rock appeal, they will definitely be getting the crowd hot and sweaty.

Joining them are The Naked and Famous – though not generally naked, they’re on their way to being famous. Having dropped the astounding hit-laden EPs This Machine and No Light in a quick ‘one-two’ sucker punch in 2008, the indie-dance-rock-electronic-punk act went on an eye opening trip to CMJ in New York and followed this up with supporting Nine Inch Nails in Auckland (at Trent Reznor’s request). Having now cemented their live line up, they’ve been back in Auckland recording again, releasing the infectious single All Of This and impressing with their tight live shows, including an appearance at the prestigious new Laneway Festival.

Also helping to get the riot of fun started are Auckland four piece Clap Clap Riot. Their fizzing energy, hook laden songs, whirling guitars and raucous vocals are a perfect combination of rock n roll attitude and pop passion. Having won the MTV Kickstart award in 2008, they released their debut EP TV Knows Better in 2009, gaining quick recognition for their singles Don’t Want Your Baby and Thief.

Kicking off the show will be up and comers Long Story Short. Having formed at the Auckland School of Rock in 2008, the five piece (two guys and three girls) have been busy distilling their influences (such as Paramore, Guns n Roses and Green Day) into their own dramatic sound, and blood pumping live show. They were recently placed in the top 14 bands at the 2009 Rocksquest, and are determined to take their music further into the limelight.

Limited $15 presales (with no booking fee) from Eventfinder, or from Giapo, the Italian gelato store at 279 Queen St (next to the Civic). If you buy a presale, you also go into the draw on the night to win a massive prize pack of CDs, vouchers, etc!

RSVP on Facebook and become a fan to get details about cool prizes leading up to the show!
